Civics Objectives

 

Goals: The primary goal of the class to pursue a deeper understanding of the institutions of American government in order for the students to become literate in civic studies, preparing them to vote, participate in community activities and assume the responsibilities of citizenship.

 

Objective: To create a learning environment that will be conducive to the diverse needs of the students; utilizing technologies on a regular basis, incorporating group activities to promote social cohesiveness, individualized instruction when necessary and appropriate, classroom lectures and discussions to accentuate critical themes and information, and selected viewing of films, either educational documentaries or Hollywood productions.

 

Format: To follow the outline in the prescribed text, spending appropriate time on each individual aspect, while directing instruction toward the State Standardsand the district ESLRs. This is a one semester class that will be split into six three week periods following the schools APP schedule.

 

Classroom Management: It is the belief that classroom management takes care of its self. Keeping the students on track and focused on learning along with clear rules of behavior limit classroom interferences and disturbances. If in the event classroom behavior deteriorates, the instructor will either handle the situation first hand or refer the student to the school administration for appropriate action. Actions taken by the instructor will be positive role modeling, individualized conferencing with students outside of the classroom, dismissal of the students to their advisors, parent contact and referral to the school site administration.

 

Rules of Classroom Behavior: Respect yourself, your environment, and your peers. Punctual attendance, productive participation and preparedness are mandated by the instructor in order for the students to be successful.

 

Tentative Schedule:   1stAPP;students will investigate the moral values of Americaand relate them to the principles of democracy. Students will interpret the Constitution and Supreme Court decisions regarding American morality. (12.1)

                                    2ndAPP;students will evaluate and defend political positions that expand and constrict personal rights and obligations as American citizens, i.e. freedom of speech, religion, press etc. (12.2) Students will take and defend positions on what the fundamental values and principles of civil society are, i.e. to associate with others for the purpose of political, social and economic gains. (12.3)

                                    3rdAPP;students will analyze and evaluate the differences and similarities of the three levels of governance. (12.6) Students will compare the roles and powers of the local, state and federal governments. (12.7)

 

 

                                    4thAPP; students will investigate the three branches of government, determine their values and weaknesses, and contemplate their relationships with one another. (12.4) Students will investigate Supreme Court decisions that have severe impacts on American’s interpretations of the Constitution. (12.5)

                                    5thAPP;Students will evaluate the influences of media on the public, and the political establishments of America. (12.8) Students will formulate and defend positions based on American ideals, including; equality for all, majority rule, civil disobedience, etc. etc. etc. (12.10)

                                    6thAPP;students will examine any subject matter that they feel has either been neglected and or they would like to delve into deeper. This will allow students to individualize their learning invoking a sense of civil accountability.

 

 

 

 

In order to receive all grades and credits for Civics, students must complete

all of the following to an acceptable standard:

 

  1. 75 hours of productive time
  2. Textbook Work
  3. Lecture/Note Taking
  4. Discussions
  5. Prescribed projects meeting set standards
  6. Political Spectrum
  7. Election & Voting
  8. Branch of Government

 

  1. Requirement set through School District, and monitored through the Civics class.
  2. 20 Hours of Community Service
  3. Three Typed Page Reflective Paper
  4. Written Verification

 

            D) Passing grade of 60% on all assessments; quizzes and tests

 

            E) Passing Grade of 70% or Better on the Final Exam
